CLIENT: HOUSTON BOTANIC GARDEN
When the Houston Botanic Garden opened in 2020, it had an unusual story. Unlike most of the city’s cultural institutions, it wasn’t inside the loop. In fact, it rather unexpectedly found a home on a converted golf course in southeast Houston, in an area better known for its taco trucks and proximity to Hobby Airport.
The garden’s staff were extremely proud of its accessible location and the institution’s goal to bring horticultural education to all Houstonians. This pride inspired the script.
After a brainstorm with my client agency, VISION Production Group, we knew the video would begin with drone footage flying into the green space from Houston’s concrete freeways, a nod to the placemaking and creating of home that Houston, a city of immigrants, is so good at.
The script needed to convey overarching themes like pride and welcome and diversity, but also a list of offerings and services so viewers could understand the garden’s range. After a few iterations with our (very thoughtful) end client, we knew what we wanted to say.
